HMG description
Menotropin (also called human menopausal gonadotropin or HMG) is an active substance for the treatment of fertility disturbances. It consists of gonadotropins that are extracted from the urine of postmenopausal women, usually luteinizing (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Often, it contains human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) as well.
HMG application
Menotropin
preparations are used for stimulating hormones by triggering FSH and LH
production in the body. This drug was originally designed for use in
women where it stimulates the ovaries to produce multiple follicles,
thus making them more fertile.
Human urinary-derived menotropin
preparations are exposed to the theoretical risk of infection from
menopausal donors of urine. Nevertheless, the failure to irrefutably
demonstrate infectivity following intracerebral inoculation with urine
from TSE-infected hosts suggests that the risk associated with products
derived from urine is merely theoretical.
